What is best for driving a 2008 Ford Focus with low profile tires in heavy snow"?

I recently purchased a 2008 Ford Focus-4 cylinder front wheel drive and had a horrible time maneuvering in the snow and heavy slush. Should I buy new rims and snow tires next winter? Should I buy all weather tires and will I still have to buy new rims? Should I just trade it in for something that has more tire on the road? I can't keep getting to work late! I live in OHIO! Any help or comments will be appreciated:-)What is best for driving a 2008 Ford Focus with low profile tires in heavy snow"?
You might be able to get away with smaller rims and winter tires, and yes, cars are generally horrible in slush, often worse than in snow. Tire Rack has a great selection of rims and tires. Without getting rid of your low-pro's, you won't get good traction in the snow; however, keep both sets of rims, so you don't have to get your tires re-mounted when the seasons change, you can just switch out rims with the correct tires already there. If you seriously need to drive in the snow, though, you need to trade that Focus in for (if you want to stay with Ford) an F150 crew cab short bed 4x4 or an Explorer, or if you don't care what brand, get a Jeep Grand Cherokee - I have had many cars and trucks, and my 2002 Jeep is better in the snow than my snowplow truck (F350 with an 8-ft. plow and a salt spreader in the back)
Yes, buy 4 new winter tires. Rims optionalWhat is best for driving a 2008 Ford Focus with low profile tires in heavy snow"?
What you need is a set of snow/winter specific tires. Summer tires/tires that are all season have the wrong style of rubber compound, that makes it nearly impossible to in inclimate weather. Buy yourself a set of snow tires, and your car will be fine in snow/rain. As far as new wheels are concerned, the Ford Focus is an economy car, so finding a set of cheap wheels to put on the car with your snow tires will be easy. Check craigslist for a set of used Focus wheels, it should be under $100. Go to www.tirerack.com for reviews of winter tires, they also have great wheel/tire packages.

On a side note, whereever you get the tires, make sure you check the date of manufacture on the tires. Keep in mind that six years after a tire is made, it must be thrown away regardless of the mileage used. good luck and remember to drive slowly.
Low profile tires are going to be a problem in the snow. I would buy 4 stock wheels and either put all weather or snow tires on them. Before the first snow, change the tires and rims, putting the low profile ones in storage for the winter. What is best for driving a 2008 Ford Focus with low profile tires in heavy snow"?
I had the same problem here in New England. I have the low profile tires on 16" rims. I got 4 snow tires (not all season) and they work great . I believe there are only 2 snow tire sizes available for a Focus w/16" wheels, there are a lot more tire options if you can get 15" rims.

The all weather tires aren't much better than the low profile tires.
