What does it mean when your tires are squealing?

I just took my car to a "cheap" place to have new tires put on. 3 days later- i noticed a little squeak when i drove. They said it was because they were just put on. Now - a week later it is SO loud that i can hear it with the windows up, and the service engine soon light came on!--I am so upset about this. What would cause this? It gets worse when i turn corners and press the breaks. Please help. By the way--its a 2000 Saturn CoupeWhat does it mean when your tires are squealing?
OK.. because you said it happens when you press your breaks I am discounting power steering issues.

New tires should not do that. Not after the first hour of driving or so (what ever it takes to wear down those little nubs). It sounds more like the alignment has been messed up. On other possibility is a problem with the tire or a wheel that was damaged during the installation.

BUT.. that would not make the engine light come on.

So.. it is possible that you have TWO separate issues that (lucky you) have happened in close proximity.

First.. drive it around with a friend in the passenger side. Try to figure out if the noise is coming from one side or the other. Does the wheel shake or vibrate when you drive or stop? Check the tires on that side, looking at the front and the back.. look at the rim too (take off the hubcap)..

Second.. (or maybe first) have the engine light checked out by a mechanic (not the tire place). That could be routine or it could be simple but best not to get it mixed up with the tires if it does not belong there.

Third.. Go back to the tire place with the complaint and whatever observations you have made... will they address the problem? Will they actually SOLVE it?

Fourth.. if not.. take it to another shop and get an ESTIMATE for the repairs.. (might cost you a couple of $ but you will, in effect, get an answer) ...then you will know what to do next

good luck.. after that it is likely a small claims issue if you can prove that they screwed it up and that it is not just something else.
,Sure sounds like brakes to me. They need new pads. Try this. With

the car parked and in park, move the steering wheel back and forth.

If you can hear the squealing with the car parked- its the power

steering. If it is not leaking water or running hot, its not the water

pump. Then with it still in park, motor running, rev up the motor a time

or two. No squealing, then its not a dry fan belt. That would be the

least expensive. That takes us back to the brakes. Find a MASTER

MUFFLER. they will give you the best deal and are less likely to

lie to you. Also, I would most likely just get the front ones replaced.

The back ones don't ware out that often. Get some one on here to give

you some idea about what the cost should be. Make sure

you have plenty oil in the moter and - do not drive it, if its low

on oil -. If low oil is the cause for the squealing, put oil in the

moter and a forsale sign in the window. I suspect that it is

a falt in the light but it needs to be checked out. Good luck. What does it mean when your tires are squealing?
From what you describe your new tires are not the issue.

Tires squeal when they are at the limit of thier adhesion and starting to slide. You've got to be turning at high speed or braking very hard (without ABS) to do that. Tires do not squeak when just cruising down the road and they certainly do not cause a check engine light to come on.

The solution to your problem lies elsewhere.
You went to a CHEAP place for tires. They installed tires for you. I seriously doubt it's the tires. Have an alignment done and find a reputable repair facility to check out the engine light for you and give you an estimate on repairs. The check engine light is totally irrelevant to the tires. What does it mean when your tires are squealing?
It ain't the tars! If your tires are "squealing" they're slipping or sliding across the contact surface and that means you're driving too fast. I'm guessing that's not the problem.

I would check your fan belt(s). Those can "squeal" constantly or on ocasion. Brakes will normally only "squeal" when stopping. As far as I know, a CEL, check engine light, has nothing to do with cheap or expensive tires, let alone how properly or improperly they were installed; or brakes. It ain't the tars!
Head right back to the shop and speak with the Service Manager.

You've got a problem cooking here...

I can't believe they told you it was because they were just put

on without asking you to come down for a look....

Don't wait any longer...
Engine belt is slipping, or the wear sensors on the brakes are contacting the rotor to indicate your pads are worn out.
a couple things you could check are brakes and the serpentine belt cause when you turn it just might kick on the check engine light
It's not the tires, it's the brakes.
they could have been put on wrong....really shitti tires....thats what they do when you stop and turn..or it may just be wet out
I would take it to a good repair shop before your tires fall off on the highway or something
wheels are extremely out of alignment
