What are those winter tires called that have steel studs sticking out of them?

Are they just referred to as studded-tires? or are they called something else? And my 2nd question is, are they permitted to drive with in the US?

Thank you for your help.|||that,s what they are called. studded tires. you can use them here in the US as long as you have them off by the 15th of april.|||In Belgium we call them 'SPIKES'.|||In the US they are called winter tires with studs. As, to whether they are legal to drive in a particular area.....it would depend upon the area/State. Most states now ban studded tires because they are so hard on the roadways. Here is a link to get you started.

you will have to check your local laws but in many states they are ok to use but only during winter months.

most snow tires can be studded only as new before they have been driven.

where i came from in snow country all of the tire shops offered studs on their new snow tires as a service.|||studded snow tires.
